FairWare virus Removal Guide

Description of FairWare ransomware virus

What is known about FairWare ransomware virus?

FairWare virus targets Linux OS users and attacks web servers that are running on Redis (an open source, in-memory data structure store that is used as a database, cache, and messages broker). Once the virus was detected, it was categorised as ransomware. The virus differs from other ransomware viruses because it’s not a crypto malware. That means it doesn’t encrypt files; it attacks the server and deletes the web folder. The first FairWare ransomware victims noticed that their websites were shut down. When they logged into the server, they noticed that instead of the folder there’s READ_ME.txt file. The note contained a link to a full ransom note that is published on Pastebin (a web application that allows storing plain text). Hackers ask victims to pay 2 BTC (933 GBP) in two week time. However, recently virus researchers found out that the hackers do not have hijacked files. Once the ransomware gets in, it deletes the files. So, there’s no need to contact and pay the ransom. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to restore your lost data. However, you have to remove FairWare from your computer and start thinking about alternative ways to back up your files. You can never know when the next ransomware attack might occur.

In the ransom note, the creators of FairWare virus left their contact email address fairware@sigaint.org and clearly stated that they would not respond to users who ask for confirmation that hackers have their files. It was a first red flag that hackers are bluffing and just trying to scare victims. Also, crooks tried to scare victims by telling that they leak their data if they wouldn’t pay the ransom. As far as we know, there were any information leakages. Another interesting fact is that hackers call themselves ‘business’ people. So, they are offering their help only for people who take this note seriously and are willing to pay the ransom. Hackers might explain how to pay the ransom, but they will never bring back the hijacked files. As we mentioned before, if you’re a victim of this ransomware, you have to deal with the information loss and consider FairWare removal. For virus removal, we recommend using FortectIntego.

How do ransomware viruses spread?

Generally, ransomware viruses spread via three different methods: via spam emails and infected e-mail attachments, as Trojans or exploit kits, and via file-sharing domains. So, cyber security specialists recommend users to be careful with opening suspicious e-mails, downloading e-mail attachments, and using file-sharing programs. Moreover, users should use professional anti-malware programs that are created for strengthening computer’s security system. However, FairWare is a fake ransomware virus. Recently IT specialists have discovered that FairWare malware spreads via hacked Redis servers. So, the only way to protect your data from this virus is to use updated version of Redis. Furthermore, you should backup your data regularly and keep it in the external storage.

FairWare elimination

For FairWare removal you will need a professional and reliable malware removal tools. The variety is huge, so it’s easy to get lost between different programs. So, our team recommends choosing FortectIntego or SpyHunter 5Combo Cleaner. However, the virus can block program’s installation or prevent from running a full system scan. In this case, you have to reboot your computer to Safe Mode with Networking and try to remove FairWare again by repeating the same steps.

How to prevent from getting ransomware

Prevent the government from spying on you

As there is a growing debate in government about collecting users' data and spying on citizens, you should take a closer look at this issue and find out what shady ways of gathering information can be used to collect information about you. You need to browse anonymously if you want to avoid any government-initiated spying and tracking of information.

You can enjoy secure internet browsing and minimize the risk of intrusion into your system if you use Private Internet Access VPN program. This VPN application creates a virtual private network and provides access to the required data without any content restrictions.

Control government and other third party access to your data and ensure safe web browsing. Even if you do not engage in illegal activities and trust your ISP, we recommend being careful about your security. You should take extra precautions and start using a VPN program.

Reduce the threat of viruses by backing up your data

Due to their own careless behavior, computer users can suffer various losses caused by cyber infections. Viruses can affect the functionality of the software or directly corrupt data on your system by encrypting it. These problems can disrupt the system and cause you to lose personal data permanently. There is no such threat if you have the latest backups, as you can easily recover lost data and get back to work.

It is recommended to update the backups in parallel each time the system is modified. This way, you will be able to access the latest saved data after an unexpected virus attack or system failure. By having the latest copies of important documents and projects, you will avoid serious inconveniences. File backups are especially useful if malware attacks your system unexpectedly. We recommend using the Data Recovery Pro program to restore the system.
